The longer title of the Act read 'An Act for Incorporation, Winding-up and Regulation of Trading Companies and other Associations'. Originally, the Companies Registry was based in the office of the Registration of Deeds, later, within the Rolls Office. In 1965, the General Registry was created by Act of Tynwald and the Companies Registry became a division of the General Registry. On 1st April 2000, responsibility for the registration of companies was transferred from the General Registry to the Financial Supervision Commission with the passing of the 'Companies (Transfer of Functions) Act 2000'. In April 2010, as part of the review of the scope and structure of the Isle of Man Government the Companies Registry was moved to the new Department of Economic Development. In 2018, the Isle of Man Companies Registry became a formal part of the Central Registry. The Central Registry Act 2018 created the office of the Registrar General and the Central Registry, which includes the registries of companies, deeds and probate, charities and land, alongside the Civil Registry and the Public Record Office.
