TitleIsle of Man Mental Hospital: Reception Orders
Date1864-1949
DescriptionReception orders were the papers necessary for the admission or transfer of a patient to the Lunatic Asylum and its successors under the original legislation. All patients prior to 1924 would have had a reception order, as would the majority of patients thereafter. A reception order was completed by a Justice of the Peace, directing the Asylum to receive the named patient. Details recorded in the order include the patient's personal and medical history, details of physical and mental condition, place of abode, age, marital status and occupation, as well as a medical certificate signed by a doctor.
Some reception orders are marked 'Private Patient'. This indicates that the costs of treatment and care for these individuals were paid privately, rather than by local or national authorities.

This is not a complete list of reception orders held by the Isle of Man Public Record Office, only those that are open to the public are listed in the catalogue.
NotesIn this catalogue you may find terminology or language included in historical record titles and descriptions that are today considered offensive or pejorative. These terms have been retained in the catalogue in order to reflect the historical accuracy of the record. All such terms will appear in inverted commas and they are in no way representative of views or opinions of the Isle of Man Government in the 21st Century. The only exception where inverted commas have not been used is for administrative bodies that carried the expression 'Lunatic' in their title, as this was the formal name of the institution itself. We apologise for any offence that our inclusion of these words may cause.
Physical DescriptionThe majority of these records have been stored folded; those that have been listed have been flattened as part of the 2015/2016 cataloguing project.
