TitlePatient Care Records: Isle of Man Lunatic Asylum and its successors
Date1864-1995
DescriptionThis series gathers records regarding the Isle of Man Lunatic Asylum and Ballamona Hospital's patients' health care during their stay in the institution.
It comprises:
-case books from the early period of the hospital, which are organised by patient admission and indexed at the back. They depict the patient's condition on arrival and the treatment they undertook during their stay in the institution;
-Head Nurses' reports that describe any outstanding circumstances relating to patients during their shift, and cover all wards of the Hospital;
-registers of mechanical restraint and seclusion;
-Medical Superintendent discharge recommendations;
-a notebook that records sick patients and when their family was contacted regarding the situation;
-patients' case notes that are organised by date of death since the late 1960's and that reflect the continuation of the case books series.
NotesIn this catalogue you may find terminology or language included in historical record titles and descriptions that are today considered offensive or pejorative. These terms have been retained in the catalogue in order to reflect the historical accuracy of the record. All such terms will appear in inverted commas and they are in no way representative of views or opinions of the Isle of Man Government in the 21st Century. The only exception where inverted commas have not been used is for administrative bodies that carried the expression 'Lunatic' in their title, as this was the formal name of the institution itself. We apologise for any offence that our inclusion of these words may cause.
