TitlePlanning Committee: Planning applications index maps: National Grid index maps
Date1950s-1999
DescriptionA collection of maps serving as an index to planning applications submitted to the Isle of Man Government.

National Grid maps form the base maps, onto which annotations have been made to record planning applications submitted for each property or area of land. Each property subject to a planning application has been outlined in ink and the planning application reference number written on the map. Base maps are of varying dates, some produced by Ordnance Survey and some by the Isle of Man Local Government Board or Department of Local Government and the Environment. Those for Douglas and Onchan are scale 1:1250, whilst other areas of the Island are scale 1:2500. Each map has a header strip attached (from a time when the maps were hanging in a cabinet).

For some areas of the Island there are two or three National Grid map sheets, typically one in use from the 1960s and then further sheets added by the Planning team in the 1980s either to provide more space to add new application reference numbers or because the built environment had changed substantially. In this catalogue, they are listed as a continuation of the first sheet and not a separate item.

The Isle of Man Public Record Office reference codes for this collection of records follow the original Ordnance Survey reference system, in numerical order, to ease finding.

The original index plan sheets SC 2667-2767, SC 3274 and SC4594 were missing from the sequence at the time of its transfer to the Isle of Man Public Record Office. Digital surrogate for these sheets are available, with the exception of SC 4594.

When searching for planning applications, researchers should also consult the maps in S90/1, S90/2 and S90/4.

When using these indexes, the first step is to identify the map sheet where the property is located. This can be done by referring to the overview index maps at S90/3/1; then viewing the individual maps sheet for the specific area of the Island and finding the property itself on the map. Any application numbers identified on the index maps can then be researched further using the planning registers (S89), the application files (S10) and the planning committee minutes (S92).
Physical DescriptionA large number of these plans are fragile and should be handled as little as possible. Digital scans of the majority of these plans exist and should be served instead of the original paper plans. Original format for the digital scans: Irfan View SID File. The digital scans of these items were created by the Planning and Building division of Isle of Man Government. These scans were separated into three sets: National Grid Set 1, National Grid Set 2 and National Grid Set 3. These sets are believed to relate to the date and batches in which the plans were scanned. The details of which set of scans the digital surrogate was found is given in the 'Notes' field for each item.
